1. Introduction
The Ortur R2 is marketed as a closed "plug-and-play" laser system for beginners. I tested the version with the powerful 20W diode module, the Air Assist OAP 1.0-40L (Old Version), and the specialized 1064nm infrared module (LR4-1A). As a beginner, assembly was surprisingly easy, and the basic setup in LightBurn was quickly done. The enclosed design immediately conveys a high sense of safety.
2. Design, Safety, and Usability
The R2 impresses with its enclosed housing (Class 4), which ensures maximum safety and reduces odor and smoke. Integrated flame sensors and a tilt sensor are further advantages. The touchscreen and the included Air Assist are essential for operation.
3. Module Tests – Performance and Material
20W Diode Laser (Wood, Leather): The 20W module is a true powerhouse. When engraving wood, the results are precise and deep; photo-realistic engravings are also possible. Cutting plywood is very clean and fast with the Air Assist – performance exceeds expectations for a diode laser. Leather engravings show sharp contours. Simple focusing is impressive.
1064nm IR Module (Metals): This special module makes the R2 a hybrid device. It enables the direct engraving of metals (e.g., stainless steel) with razor-sharp and permanent results. Only shiny, reflective metals (like polished aluminum) remain a challenge.
4. Points of Frustration and Criticism (Urgent Improvement Needed)
Although the laser performance is convincing, the "smart" features show clear weaknesses:
Camera Functionality: This is the biggest point of criticism.
Setup: Camera calibration via the Ortur App is very cumbersome and unintuitive.
Offset: Even after calibration, the camera has a large, uncorrectable offset in LightBurn. This makes the precise alignment of the design practically unusable.
Illumination Problem: The front LED lighting is so bright that it overexposes the work surface in the front area. Since the brightness cannot be adjusted, the camera's view is blocked in this important area.
5. Conclusion and Recommendation
The Ortur R2 is an outstanding device for ambitious beginners who value performance and safety. The combination of the 20W diode and 1064nm IR makes it extremely versatile.
Nevertheless, Ortur must fix the flawed implementation of the camera function and the lighting system. If you can position your designs classically, you get a fantastic, powerful, and safe hybrid laser.
